Meet Ellie Elephant!
Ellie Elephant has earned the title "Resident Traveller of KTS"! Every child has an opportunity to take Ellie home for a week-long adventure sometime throughout the school year! This is another show-and-tell opportunity for your child, as Ellie always goes with her beloved Adventure Journal, which chronicles her time with each friend in our class. The children have had lots of fun taking Ellie everywhere, from the grocery store, to the post office, hockey tournaments, farms, family vacations, gymnastics lessons, the list goes on!
Usually starting after Christmas Break, I'll randomly pick a child who will get to take Ellie for the week. Each child's family helps them to document their adventure with Ellie in some way - some have drawn pictures and written a few words on their own, some families have helped the child with their brief journal entry, some have even included photos and special scrapbook stickers and embellishments!
In order to ensure that each child gets their turn, Ellie gets sent home on a Thursday, and I ask that she be returned for the following Wednesday (this ensures a day's grace in case she is accidentally forgotten at home!) The child who had Ellie for the week then gets to have a show and tell to talk about their journal entry and describe the various activities they did together and places that they went. When each child has had a turn to take Ellie home once, there might be enough time left in the school year for each child to take Ellie home a second time (this time, just for one "sleep"!) for one last visit before Grade One, and a chance to look at Ellie's Adventure Journal with their families to see all of the different adventures Ellie has had in the year with her kindergarten friends!
