Meet Flat Stanley!
We read the book Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown. In the book, Stanley Lambchop and his younger brother Arthur are given a big bulletin board by their Dad for putting pictures and posters on. He hangs it on the wall over Stanley's bed, but during the night the board falls from the wall, flattening Stanley in his sleep. Stanley makes the best of his altered state, and soon he is entering locked rooms by sliding under the door, and playing with his younger brother by being used as a kite. Stanley even helps catch some art museum thieves by posing as a painting on the wall. But one special advantage is that Flat Stanley can now visit his friends by being mailed in an envelope.
We will use Flat Stanley to help us learn about different places in Alberta, Canada and the rest of the globe by sending Stanley along on any KTS family vacations! This is a wonderful way for students to make connections to other places that they might not normally get to visit! Last year, whenever Flat Stanley returned from a vacation, we used Google Earth to show how far (or near!) he and our friend were from our school in Bonnyville. We also looked at photos of Flat Stanley and our kindergarten friends doing things together on their vacation. In years past, Flat Stanley got to go to California, Jamaica, B.C., Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Texas, the Bahamas, Drumheller, Disneyland, Ireland, Mexico, Hong Kong, Abu Dhabi and West Edmonton Mall! He also got to meet a real NHL player (one friend's parents were friends with a player for the Calgary Flames), and he even got to try on a Grey Cup championship ring (another friend's grandpa was a former Saskatchewan Roughrider)!
If your family is ever headed on an adventure near or far and you are interested in taking Flat Stanley with you, please let me know! :)
